This is a refreshing read by Trisha Sanchez, an official CAPA blogger who is studying abroad in Shanghai this semester. CAPA is a “Global Education Network that works with institutions of higher education to build programs that meet their goals for learning abroad”. (See article)
I have lived on 3 continents and there truly is no substitute for experiencing the similarities and contrasts in traditions that shape the many cultures in our globe. There might be new social norms, rules, etiquette, and other behavior to adapt to, but this is an opportunity for gaining a greater global perspective. It also a great way to increase empathy and understanding across cultures – the earlier we expose this to our children, the better.
CAPA’s commitment to diversity and international education has really resonated with me and it comes through Ms. Sachez’s words as she shares her own experience in Shanghai with the world. “We provide students the tools they need — regardless of age, race and ethnic background, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and abilities — to fully experience the diversity of the world through our programs. We view our commitment to diversity as a form of social justice by promoting international education as an opportunity that is available and achievable for everyone”.
The beauty of mankind is in our differences and oneness, not sameness.
“We have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.” — Jimmy Carter
